Marble Hertfordshire

As the name correctly implies, sandstone (aka arenite) is made up of sand. The properties of sandstone have no specific mineral content but secondary minerals add part of the materials colour and ultimate appeal. Secondary minerals including hematite, feldspar, mica, clay etc. all add to the varying colours and natural sandstone texture. Alike sand, sandstone is therefore available in a multitude of differing colours such as tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, pink, and white.

An additional type of sedimentary rock. This sedimentary sandstone is formed of minerals or grains of rock. Composed of feldspar and/or quartz. This is simply because within the Earth’s crust these minerals are in abundance.

Sandstone plays an important role in nature. The materials properties lend themselves to act as natural petroleum reservoirs and liquid aquifers. This is owing to sandstone allowing water and fluid percolation. Place these properties with a large rock formation this material has the natural porosity to to store large fluid quantities. The fine grain of this stone enables the natural filtering of pollutants.

As with most stone materials, quarrying is the means of mining this medium. Sawn sandstone is then cut down into small thin slabs for consumer use.

Sandstone formations generally have a historical tendency to be located is areas that used to be smaller coastal regions. These are in the main arid or desert regions such as the Middle East, The central and Deserts parts of Australia. Indian sandstone is also available.

Sandstone properties make it a perfect building material. Strength is one of the materials great characteristics enabling it to be used for load-bearing stonework added to the variety of the colour palette available. This structural sandstone use of Sandstone applies architecturally to columns, pillars and arches as a few examples of the materials strength. In addition sandstone blocks are used for the creation of walls and as foundation stones.

Additional sandstone features are that it offers good thermal resistant properties and excellent binding capabilities with aggregates such as cement offering long term durability. Highly resistant to corrosion as you would expect for a naturally occurring stone material. Sandstone is used in the manufacturing of all glass types. Alkali and acids cause no concerns for this robust stone either hence the usage in commercial flooring applications.

The uses of sandstone are vast. Within construction they are used for foundations, beams, pillars, arches, wall facings, walls & roofs. Sandstone is used to crush with concrete and asphalt for the construction of jetties and dams.

Sandstone products include interior decorative sandstone uses such as fireplaces, mantle pieces, slabs are used for wall cladding, shower panels, worktops, tiles

External decorative sandstone uses include landscaping products, bricks, steps, garden furniture/ornaments, wall cladding. In fact the carrying colours make the use for sandstone a perfect choice for garden pathways. Additionally paving (pavers), edging pieces, sandstone capping stones, pool coping, blocks, rocks and even boulders are put to use in a decorative external setting.

More substantially sandstone is used for facades, retaining walls or fabulous feature walls.

This material is so flexible and has a vast range of arts and crafts uses too! Coasters, paperweights, bookends, clocks, carving, fountains, sculptures, veneers,

We are a sandstone supplier in slab form where we fabricate to your specific requirements. Garden and arts and crafts related fields are not areas we get involved with.
